Abstract

Background and Aim: The enemy's cognitive operations, leveraging generative artificial intelligence and social platforms as the most advanced layer of hybrid and cognitive warfare, represent the most significant meta-modern threat to the fundamental beliefs, organizational loyalty, and intellectual-ideological cohesion of the Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The present study aimed to discover and develop indigenous cultural-security protection strategies against this threat. Methods: Employing Strauss and Corbin’s systematic grounded theory, the research engaged 22 senior military and academic experts. Purposeful sampling followed by theoretical sampling continued until theoretical saturation. Data were collected through in-depth semi-structured interviews and analysed via open, axial, and selective coding. Findings: Findings yielded a paradigmatic model comprising six core categories and 18 selective codes. The central phenomenon — “adversary’s cognitive operations against the mind and heart of the armed forces” — occurs within the digital environment under causal conditions of intensified deepfakes, personalized fake content, and erosion of security social capital. Three macro-strategies were extracted in order of priority: 1) preventive enlightenment and cognitive inoculation, 2) intelligent protection and proactive monitoring, 3) strengthening security social capital and Wilayah-oriented bonding. Fifteen detailed strategies were also ranked, with the highest priority assigned to deepfake detection training and adversary operation simulation. Conclusion: Implementing these strategies ensures cognitive resilience of the armed forces, establishes active deterrence, and secures a Strong Iran against cognitive warfare. This research presents the first indigenous paradigmatic model of cultural-security protection against generative AI threats.
