Rent-seeking, preventive policies, governance challenges

(Comparative study of US and Islamic Republic of Iran policies in the face of rent-seeking phenomenon)

Abstract

Rent-seeking, a pervasive economic phenomenon with conceptual parallels to corruption, entails the manipulation of resource distribution mechanisms to secure economic gains. Economists have identified rent-seeking as a significant threat to economic systems and societies. Employing a descriptive-analytical approach, this research explores innovative and effective solutions to enhance national anti-rent-seeking policies. To achieve this objective, the study begins with thoroughly examining the theoretical literature on rent-seeking and its origins. Subsequently, the detrimental impacts of rent-seeking on the economic system are meticulously analyzed. To ensure the practical applicability of the research findings, the study incorporates a comparative analysis of the preventive anti-rent-seeking policies of the United States and Iran. This comparative analysis reveals strengths and weaknesses in both countries' approaches, highlighting gaps in legislation and implementation. The research concludes by proposing recommendations for developing an effective preventive anti-rent-seeking policy.
