Abstract

Physical exercise is one of the most important factors influencing the maintenance and enhancement of physical health and psychological well-being among personnel during mandatory military service.

The purpose of this study is to reconstruct the functions of physical exercise and organizational vitality during the period of conscription.

This research is applied in terms of orientation; phenomenological in terms of philosophical foundation; inductive in approach; based on a survey strategy; and exploratory-descriptive in its objectives. It follows a cross-sectional time horizon، and data collection methods include document analysis، interviews، and focus groups.

The study population consists of two groups:

The first group includes 72 accessible documents retrieved from scientific databases using a census sampling method.

The second group comprises 18 university professors and organizational experts، selected through purposeful and snowball sampling.

For data analysis، thematic analysis was employed using MAXQDA 2024 software. Validity was ensured through triangulation، theoretical sensitivity questionnaires، and expert focus group discussions.

Thematic analysis of the functions of physical exercise during conscription led to the identification of 923 basic codes، 51 central categories، and 4 overarching themes. In addition، four main dimensions of physical activity were identified:

Public sports (5 categories)

Educational sports (4 categories)

Professional sports (4 categories)

Competitive sports (4 categories)

These four overarching themes and dimensions of physical activity (public، educational، professional، and competitive) provide a foundation for effective policy-making in the area of physical activity for conscripted personnel.
